Being cheap bit me in the ass…but just a little.
I had to completely re-do both hubs on my utility trailer today. I’ve been re-using the same seals for 22 years and it finally caught up with me.
I won’t feel too bad about it because the issue was discovered in a routine service rather than on the side of the road but imagine my surprise in pulling off a dust cap and finding the hub packed with mayonnaise. I held onto a little hope as I wiped a bearing race clean but there was pitting…
The cost of new bearings and seals was about the same as what I would have spent on seals if I had bought them when I should have over the years so I was lucky.
