I was just watching a news report about blizzard conditions out East where a motorist who was talking about driving conditions described visibility as being “pitch white. When has pitch ever been white?
I was thinking about the English carnival game of Aunt Sally and thought about a version played by the townswomen in the Canadian village where I grew up: They would throw a rolling pin with the goal of knocking a hardhat off an effigy representing their drunken husband. I wonder how many variants are played around the world.
I was in a shopping mall today and noticed a lingerie store right beside a maternity clothing store. I wonder how often a visit to one results in a visit to the other.
I was at a party tonight and talking with a fellow about our respective sleep deprivation induced psychosis experiences. His were from drug use and seem MUCH more extreme than my work related incidents.
I was thinking about my recollections of the incidents: Bugs crawling on everything, things moving in my peripheral vision that I couldn’t catch, conversations with people I knew that turned out not to be real, conspiracies involving unseen enemies, notions of demonic possession and other lovely things.
My recollections of these incidents seem unbelievable and have a foggy, surreal, or even cartoonish quality but I think they made sense at the time because I experienced these things with a fatigued and psychotic mind but now recall these events and consider them from the perspective of a sane man.
Product names have been obscured to protect the innocent….from the litigious.
Tonight I dropped into a local company’s Halloween party that was being held on their factory property.
There was a big bonfire and when one floor worker asked another if there was a rake handy to tend the fire, the answer he got was, “I don’t know about rakes. We make ***** here.” I thought about the bigger picture and why they were in business and suggested that maybe they were in the business of SELLING ***** and making them was just another activity that supported that goal; really no more or less critical than other supportive tasks like keeping the computers in the office running well.
Today I was wiring up a rather compact power distribution panel for a generator. A couple spots are tight enough that you have to pay attention to which direction the locks on your tie wraps point.
While fussing about how to route wiring I thought about horology. When additional features are added to a watch movement they’re called complications and it seems to me that it best describes what an additional feature is….from the maker’s point of view.
